Mastering the Magic: How to use a bullet vibrator

Bullet vibrators can be used on all bodies and in any relationship. They are not just confined to being used by people with vulvas. They are also a perfect addition to the bedroom whether you are brand new to sex toys or simply looking to add another one to your collection. We're biased, but the Rompy bullet is our favorite...

Unpacking the basics: What is a bullet vibrator?

Bullet vibrators are talked a lot about in the sex toy world, but it’s not always clear what they are or what differentiates them from regular vibrators.

Bullet vibrators were given their name because they’re shaped like, well… a bullet.

With a wider base and a top that comes to a bit of a rounded point, the whole toy is able to vibrate, and it allows the user to feel sensation from any angle. Some of them have flared bases (which are important to note and we’ll touch on later) which can help make their use even more versatile. Most bullet vibrators are made of of silicone, but they can also be made of metal and plastic.

And now to our favorite part, the vibration.

Each toy will differ, but most will have a range of vibrations ranging from consistent but differing intensities all the way to staccato patterns. Everyone’s body is so different that vibration is not a one-size-fits-all!

The key identifier that makes a bullet vibrator unique, is the size. They are often only a few inches big, but boy, do they make up for their size in intensity. They are the perfect travel toy and can be a lot less intimidating than full-size vibrators.

Oftentimes, because of their size, bullet vibrators are a bit quieter as well – which makes them a more discreet option.

Sex toys can be incredibly expensive, and although investing in your pleasure is a priority in our book, it’s not always accessible.

Because of their size, they often can be manufactured for less and sold for less. Bullet vibrators are usually some of the more inexpensive vibrators on the market, so they are a great starting place when trying out sex toys or an option when you want to treat yourself (or your partner) without breaking the bank.

The Health and Sexual Benefits of a Bullet Vibrator

There are a number of benefits when it comes to using a vibrator, and a bullet vibrator makes it even easier to achieve them! From using them as a part of your health care routine, increased intimacy with your partner(s), or just to feel good, bullet vibrators can do the job.

Benefit #1: Orgasms are healthy

Did you know that orgasms can help relieve stress, improve sleep, and even act as a natural pain reliever for cramps? You release a range of hormones when you orgasm, including oxytocin and dopamine. These two hormones play a huge role in reducing stress and pain relief. This is not to say that orgasms can replace medications or when needed, medical intervention, but if you even need more of a reason to pull out your bullet vibrator, getting an extra boost of those hormones is worth it!

Benefit #2: Trying something new

Whether you want to explore your sexuality alone or with someone else, the bullet vibrator is a super easy toy to introduce. There isn’t much of a learning curve to it other than figuring out where on your body it feels good.

It’s also a perfect opportunity to explore sensations throughout your body. Because it’s so compact and the vibration patterns can be changed, you can explore how it feels to stimulate your nipples, inner thighs, anus, perineum, or anywhere else you’d like!

Benefit #3: Enhanced intimacy

If you’re using a bullet vibrator with a partner, it gives you the opportunity to stay physically close. It won’t get in the way of anything else you’re trying to do or require you to keep space between you in order to use it.

These little guys can be slipped right between you in a number of ways and positions, whether you’re having penetrative sex, oral sex, or outercourse.

Benefit #4: Pleasure

Arguably the most important benefit of them all is pleasure! Feeling good is enough of a reason in and of itself. It’s important to note that because all bodies are so different. It’s OK if you try a bullet vibrator and it doesn’t bring you pleasure, or you just don’t like the feeling.

That does not mean you are broken, or something is wrong with you.

You should applaud yourself and your body for giving clues as to what it likes. Finding something that you don’t like only leads you closer to what you do like.

For those who find the sensation of a bullet vibrator to be out of this world, that is reason enough to keep using it. Your pleasure is important and should be prioritized and celebrated!

Tips and Tricks When Using a Bullet Vibrator

Tip #1: Where to use it

Historically, bullet vibrators have been marketed for use on the clitoris. While that still remains true, they can be used in so many other places too!

For vulvas:

Whether you’re partnered or using it solo, try using the bullet vibrator on your clitoris or at the opening of your vagina.

Even without inserting a bullet vibrator all the way, it can give mind-blowing sensations to have those sensations while staying on the outside. You can also use it while your partner is going down on you or fingering you to assist in a combination orgasm (which just means having an orgasm while stimulating multiple erogenous areas such as nipples, prostate, clitoris, “G-Spot”/internal clitoris).
If you and your partner both have vulvas, try putting it between you while you’re scissoring or tribbing. It gives a little extra power to it, but beware, it may lead to incredible orgasms.

For penises:

People with penises and cis-men can sometimes feel intimidated by toys. The narrative that using toys means you aren’t good enough has circled around in society for a long time. But it’s simply not true. Toys are there to increase pleasure, period. And they aren’t just for people with vulvas. You’ll actually get pleasure out of it too.

If your partner has a vulva, using it on their clitoris during penetration can actually benefit you as well! You’ll be able to feel the vibrations they’re feeling, which is both hot and pleasurable. You can also use a bullet vibrator on yourself or have it used on you more directly. Bullet vibrators can be used to stimulate the perineum (also known as the taint) or the prostate.

For anyone:

No matter who you are, you can also use a bullet vibrator on your nipples or your anus.

It’s incredibly important to remember that you should never put anything in your anus that doesn’t have a flared base.

This is even more crucial with bullet vibrators. Because they are so compact, if they don’t have a flared base, they could easily pop themselves inside and refuse to come out. A visit to the ER for help removing a vibrator from your butt is one way to kill the mood really fast.

If your bullet vibrator has a flared base, you’re good to go! Having the combination of penetration and vibration can be life-changing.

Tip #2: How to use a bullet vibrator

As we mentioned before, one of the benefits of a bullet vibrator is that typically the whole thing vibrates. This allows you to really play around with how you use it. You can use the long end to cover more ground or use the rounded tip to be more direct. Again, everyone is so different, so it’ll be up to you to figure out what feels good for your body. If you’re having trouble finding “the spot” with a partner, try using it by yourself.

Take your time, explore around with no pressure, and discover for yourself. Then you can give a bit of a map to your partner the next time you incorporate it into your play time.

Using lube with sex toys, is key, especially if you are using it internally. But whether you are using it externally or internally, lube never hurts.

If you are using lube with your bullet vibrator, you’ll have to pay attention to the materials. Silicone toys can not be used with silicone lube. It can cause your toy to deteriorate over time and is super challenging to clean off. Most bullet vibrators are silicone and sometimes plastic, so your best bet will be using a water-based or hybrid lube. If your bullet vibrator is metal, feel free to use whatever you want!

Tip #3: Storage and maintenance of a bullet vibrator

Always clean your bullet vibrator (and all sex toys) before and after use. You can use unscented soap and hot water or a toy cleaner of your choice. Try to stay away from cleaners with fragrances to prevent irritation. When storing your bullet vibrator, keep it in a dry place, and if you have a lot of other silicone toys, try keeping them separate.

Like silicone lube, silicone on silicone doesn’t interact well. Over time, they can cause the toys to deform when left in contact for too long.

Bullet vibrators are great when you want to do some temperature play too! Try throwing it in the freezer or running it under hot water before using it if you want to take things to another level. Make sure to check that it’s waterproof first. And if it is, you can even bring it in the bath or shower for some mess-free playtime.
